How LotGauge turns a car search into a smaller, verifiable shortlist.

The useful part of a car search is not collecting the most listings. It is preserving recall while filtering each candidate with consistent rules. This is the process LotGauge uses.

By the LotGauge team

1. Start with the shopper's real constraints

LotGauge starts with the things that can actually disqualify a vehicle: location, radius, make and model, year, mileage, drivetrain, transmission, fuel type, body style, title preference and monthly budget. Accident and damage history is tracked as separate evidence on each VIN rather than being inferred from title status. A broad marketplace result is not treated as a match until the shopper's selected constraints survive verification.

Marketplace vocabularies are not identical. One site may call a transmission Automatic, another CVT, another Automanual or DCT. LotGauge normalizes those provider labels into shopper-facing families instead of assuming every website uses the same words.

2. Discover broadly, then keep the exact VIN attached

Search results are useful for discovery, but the VIN is the anchor. LotGauge carries the exact VIN through listing, specification, history and duplicate checks so evidence from one vehicle is not accidentally attached to another similar trim or model.

When a marketplace splits one shopper model family into separate provider names—such as a base model, Hybrid, Plug-In Hybrid, Hatchback or Sedan variant—LotGauge can search those confirmed same-family names together and let the shopper's fuel and body rules decide what remains.

3. Separate listing freshness from vehicle-history evidence

A current listing does not automatically prove a clean title or accident-free history. LotGauge tracks those signals separately. A vehicle can be current and correctly priced while its title or accident evidence is still unknown.

Unknown does not silently become clean. When LotGauge has exact-VIN accident or damage evidence, it shows that evidence explicitly; when history cannot be confirmed, it stays unverified. The optional "Exclude known branded titles" filter hides cars where the seller or a history source shows a salvage, rebuilt, flood, lemon or other branded title. Cars with no title evidence are not hidden; they are labeled "Title not verified" so you can check before buying.

There is no accident-free filter. Accident history is shown on each car as evidence or as unknown, so you can decide for yourself.

4. Recalculate affordability from the shopper's assumptions

LotGauge does not rank only by sticker price. It estimates the financed amount after down payment and trade equity, applies the saved APR and term, and adds the shopper's insurance estimate. For vehicle tax, LotGauge can use a state-specific estimate derived from verified government-source rules and buyer/seller location; when an exact formula cannot be represented safely, it falls back to the shopper's saved tax assumption instead of inventing precision. Title and dealer fees use the shopper's saved assumptions.

The purpose is not to predict an exact lender payment. The purpose is to compare vehicles under one consistent set of assumptions so a slightly higher-priced car does not automatically outrank a car that fits the monthly budget better.

5. Rank only after the hard filters are resolved

LotGauge's result order comes after identity, geography, specification, affordability and safety checks. That matters because a marketplace's cheapest visible result can be the wrong drivetrain, outside the radius, stale, branded, or simply missing the evidence needed for a strict search.

The final result card keeps price, mileage, distance, monthly estimate and evidence status visible so the shopper can see both the recommendation and the assumptions behind it.

What LotGauge still cannot know for you

Inventory changes quickly. Dealers can change price, fees, financing terms or availability after a scan. Insurance quotes are personal. A history source can also be incomplete. LotGauge is a screening and comparison tool, not a substitute for a purchase inspection, lender disclosure, insurance quote or final title check.

Before buying, confirm the vehicle's current availability, out-the-door price, title status, financing terms and condition directly with the seller and the appropriate third parties.
